It's one of my favorite destinations in Sri Lanka, and no matter how many times I visit, I always feel that one visit is never enough. Most of the time, I travel there with my family, and every journey leaves us with wonderful memories and a deep sense of peace.

Standing majestically in the quiet village of Avukana, this magnificent Buddha statue is more than just a historical monument. It's a masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan engineering, art, and spirituality that continues to inspire everyone who visits.

Believed to have been built during the reign of King Dhathusena in the 5th century AD, the Avukana Buddha statue is one of the finest examples of stone carving from the Anuradhapura era. Whenever I stand before this giant masterpiece, I cannot help but wonder how such perfection was achieved more than 1,500 years ago.Rising to an impressive height of 40 feet (12 meters), the statue was sculpted from a single massive rock face and is almost completely free-standing, connected to the surrounding cliff by only a narrow strip of stone. The detailed folds of the robe, the graceful posture, and the calm expression on the Buddha's face reflect the incredible skills possessed by Sri Lankan ancestors. The statue itself is almost completely detached from the rock face, connected only by a narrow strip of stone. Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon, when the light casts a warm glow on the statue, and the surroundings are quiet.

Getting There: The easiest way to visit is by car or hired vehicle, as public transport options to the site are limited. It’s about a 2 hour drive from Anuradhapura.

My Personal Recommendation

I have visited the Avukana Buddha statue many times, and each visit feels special. Even now, I feel that I have not visited enough and hope to return many more times in the future. For me, it is not just an ancient monument,it's a place where history, spirituality, and the genius of ancient Sri Lankan engineering come together perfectly.

Glorious Citadel 8th Wonder Of the World , Sigiriya Lion Rock - Sri Lanka

In December holiday we  went to Sri Lanka and my 9 years old son wanted to go to Sigiriya.He is so curious about it and wanted to climb to the top by himself.A day trip was organized from Kandy. The driving distance between Kandy to Sigiriya is 90 km. From Dambulla town,there are 9 km to this marvelous masterpiece.
