New Zealand has a special way of turning an ordinary holiday into an unforgettable adventure. For our wedding anniversary, my husband, our two children and I decided to return to this beautiful country for our second visit. We had explored New Zealand’s spectacular South Island a few years ago, so this time we chose to discover the North Island, hoping to experience a completely different side of the country.
Our North Island journey took us through beautiful cities, charming towns, breathtaking landscapes and many fascinating attractions. Among all the places we visited, however, one stood out as a favourite for our entire family: Hobbiton Movie Set.
Our kids are huge fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, so they were especially excited about visiting Hobbiton. Over the years, my husband and I have watched these movies several times together with our children, making the magical world of Middle Earth a familiar part of our family. That made our visit even more special. As we walked through Hobbiton, surrounded by rolling green hills, charming Hobbit holes, colorful gardens, stone pathways and peaceful countryside, it felt as though we had stepped right into the world we had watched together on screen.
For us, visiting Hobbiton was not simply another sightseeing stop. It became one of the highlights of our family trip and a beautiful anniversary memory that we will treasure for years to come.

Our Second Visit to New Zealand
New Zealand had already captured our hearts during our first visit, when we explored the South Island. That trip introduced us to some of the country's famous alpine landscapes, lakes, mountains and scenic destinations.
When we began planning another New Zealand holiday, we wanted to experience something different. Since we had already travelled through the South Island, we decided to explore the North Island this time. It turned out to be an excellent decision.
The North Island offered us a wonderful combination of natural beauty, Māori culture, interesting cities, geothermal attractions and movie related experiences. We visited many places during our journey and each destination gave us something different to remember. But there was one place our family was especially excited about: Hobbiton.
Planning Our Visit to Hobbiton
Unlike some attractions where you can simply arrive and purchase an entrance ticket, the Hobbiton Movie Set experience is organised around guided tours. Therefore, booking your tour in advance is essential, particularly during busy travel periods. We booked our Hobbiton tour before arriving, which allowed us to choose a suitable time for our family.
On the day of our visit, we were staying in Auckland and drove towards Hobbiton. The drive itself was part of the experience. As we left the city behind, the scenery gradually changed into the peaceful countryside that New Zealand is famous for. The roads took us through green farmland, rolling hills and wide-open landscapes. The further we travelled, the more we felt that we were heading towards a completely different world. Eventually, we arrived at the Hobbiton Movie Set area, excited about what was waiting for us.

The Journey Begins
After arriving at the Hobbiton visitor centre, we joined our tour group. There were approximately 25 people in our group, creating a friendly atmosphere as everyone waited excitedly for the tour to begin. We boarded a bus that would take us from the visitor centre towards the movie set. This short bus journey was surprisingly memorable.
As the bus moved through the beautiful New Zealand countryside, we passed lush green grasslands, rolling hills and carefully maintained landscapes. A friendly tour guide accompanied us on the bus and made the journey even more interesting by sharing fascinating stories about the area. She explained how the director discovered this beautiful location for the movies, how the famous tiny Hobbit houses were created, and how local farmers played an important role in bringing the Hobbiton movie set to life. Listening to these stories while watching the breathtaking scenery outside the windows made the journey feel like part of the movie itself. The landscape was so naturally beautiful and peaceful that it was easy to understand why this particular part of New Zealand was chosen to represent the Shire. Looking out at the rolling hills and green farmland, it almost felt as though we were travelling into a real-life fantasy film.
There were mountains and hills in the distance, lush green fields surrounding us and a peaceful atmosphere that felt completely different from the busy streets of Auckland. Everyone on the bus was looking through the windows, waiting for the first glimpse of Hobbiton.

The Moment We First Saw Hobbiton
The moment we caught our first glimpse of the Hobbiton Movie Set was unforgettable. As the beautiful landscape opened up before us, we could see the famous Hobbiton setting appearing in the distance. The excitement inside the bus immediately changed.
Our children and several other children on the bus began screaming with excitement. Their reaction perfectly captured what many of us were feeling. It was one of those travel moments when you don't need to say much. You simply look around and realise that you are actually standing in a place you have previously only seen on a screen. For our children, the magic was especially real. They had seen images of Hobbiton and knew about the world of Hobbits, but seeing the colourful Hobbit holes and rolling green hills in person was completely different. For us as parents, watching their excitement made the experience even more special.
Welcome to the Shire
Stepping into Hobbiton felt like entering the pages of a storybook. The movie set was created to represent the Shire, the peaceful homeland of the Hobbits in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional world. The Shire is portrayed as a place of green hills, gardens, small homes, farms and peaceful countryside. Hobbiton brings that fictional landscape to life with remarkable attention to detail. The famous Hobbit holes are built into the hillsides, each with its own appearance and character.
Some have colouful doors.
Some have little gardens.
Others have fences, flowers, vegetables, washing lines and other small details that make them appear as though real families live inside them.
Walking along the narrow paths between the Hobbit holes was one of our favourite parts of the tour. Everywhere we looked, there was something interesting to photograph.

A World Built with Incredible Attention to Detail
One of the most impressive things about Hobbiton is the incredible level of detail. The set doesn't simply consist of a few colorful doors placed into hills. It has been carefully designed to create the feeling of a living village. There are gardens filled with plants and flowers, small fences, pathways, washing hanging outside houses and little decorations that help tell the story of the people who supposedly live there. Even though we knew we were walking through a movie set, the environment felt surprisingly authentic.
The landscape blended beautifully with the surrounding farmland. The Hobbit holes were positioned naturally across the hills rather than looking like a collection of unrelated film props. This attention to detail is one of the reasons Hobbiton feels so immersive.

Walking Through Hobbiton
Our guide led us through the village while explaining interesting stories about the filming of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. As we walked, we learned about different parts of the village and how the filmmakers created the magical appearance of Hobbiton. The tour wasn't simply about taking photographs. We were able to understand how the movie set was constructed and how different areas were used during filming.
Our guide also helped bring the fictional world to life by explaining the significance of different locations. For movie fans, these stories added another layer to the experience. For visitors who weren't particularly familiar with the films, the beautiful surroundings alone made the tour worthwhile.
The Famous Hobbit Holes
Of course, the Hobbit holes were the stars of the experience. Seeing them in person was completely different from seeing them in movies. The doors were painted in different colors, and each home had its own little personality. Some Hobbit holes appeared simple and rustic, while others were surrounded by beautiful gardens and decorations. The small scale of the buildings made the entire village feel charming and almost dreamlike.
Our children particularly enjoyed looking at the different Hobbit homes and imagining who might live behind each door. Of course, we knew that the interiors of most of these Hobbit holes are not actual homes. The magic comes from the exterior scenery, set design and the imagination behind the world. Still, it was impossible not to imagine a Hobbit opening one of those round doors and inviting us inside.

Beautiful Gardens and Countryside
Hobbiton isn't only about the Hobbit holes. The surrounding gardens and countryside are equally beautiful. Flowers, vegetables, fruit trees and carefully maintained gardens were scattered throughout the village. These details helped make Hobbiton feel like a real rural community. The bright colours of the gardens contrasted beautifully with the rich green landscape. Every few steps seemed to offer another perfect photo opportunity.
As someone who enjoys travelling and capturing memories through photography, I found it difficult to put the camera away. The combination of the Hobbit holes, gardens, hills and New Zealand countryside created photographs that looked almost unreal. Sometimes the landscape itself seemed like a painting.
A Photographer's Dream
Hobbiton is one of those destinations where you can easily fill your camera or phone with photographs. There are countless angles and viewpoints. You can photograph the Hobbit holes from the pathways, capture the surrounding hills, take family photographs beside the colorful doors or simply photograph the landscape itself.
For our family, the photographs were especially meaningful because they captured our anniversary trip. We weren't simply taking tourist photographs. We were documenting a special family journey. Our children growing up will eventually look back at these pictures and remember the day they walked through Hobbiton with us. That is one of the greatest gifts of travelling together as a family.

This iconic Hobbiton location gives visitors the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a traditional Hobbit gathering place. After walking through the beautiful village, reaching the Green Dragon Inn felt like the perfect continuation of our journey into the magical world of the Shire.
When we arrived at the Green Dragon Inn, we were served a fantastic drink that felt just like something a Hobbit would enjoy. After walking quite a long way through Hobbiton, the refreshing drink was exactly what we needed. We had become so immersed in the magical surroundings that we hardly noticed how much we had walked; it almost felt as though we had been lost in a little piece of heaven.
We settled down inside the cosy inn, surrounded by a wonderful Hobbit atmosphere, wooden tables and the warmth of the fireplace. The building, its charming interior and the beautiful landscape outside made the fictional world feel even more real. Sitting there and enjoying our drinks while relaxing by the fire was one of the most enjoyable moments of our visit.

We adults couldn't help joining in the fun and taking plenty of family photos too. It was one of those spontaneous travel moments when everyone was laughing, relaxing and simply enjoying being together. The Green Dragon Inn wasn't just another stop on our Hobbiton tour. It was a place where the world we had watched so many times on screen suddenly felt real. Sitting around the wooden tables, enjoying our drinks by the warm fire and watching our children playfully pretend to be Hobbits made it a truly memorable part of our visit. It was a funny, relaxing and wonderfully magical time and definitely one of the moments our family will remember from our unforgettable Hobbiton adventure.

More Than a Movie Set
Before visiting Hobbiton, we expected to see an impressive movie set. What we didn't fully expect was how beautiful the surrounding landscape would be. Hobbiton is not simply a collection of film locations. It's situated within a spectacular rural environment that perfectly complements the fictional world of the Shire. The peaceful atmosphere was one of the things we enjoyed most. There was no feeling of being surrounded by a busy city or crowded shopping area. Instead, there were green hills, open farmland, flowers, trees and fresh country air. It was a place where we could slow down, look around and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings.
Our Children's Favourite Part
Travelling with children can sometimes be challenging because attractions need to keep their attention. Hobbiton was different. Our children were interested from the moment we arrived. Their excitement on the bus when they first saw Hobbiton was one of the funniest and sweetest moments of the day. They enjoyed walking between the Hobbit holes, looking at the tiny details and taking photographs. The fantasy setting gave them plenty of opportunities to use their imagination. Instead of simply having a traditional anniversary dinner, we chose to celebrate by travelling with our children and discovering somewhere new together. Standing among the green hills of Hobbiton, surrounded by a landscape that looked like it belonged in a fantasy world, was certainly not an ordinary anniversary experience. It became one of those memories that we will continue talking about for years.

For us, it was not just about completing a tour; it was about enjoying every little moment and creating beautiful memories together as a family.

The tour involves quite a bit of walking through the countryside, so wearing comfortable footwear is very important. You will be walking along grass and soil paths through the rural landscape, and some areas can become slippery, especially after rain. Even on a dry day, the paths can sometimes be damp in the evening because of mist and moisture. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes with good grip to help prevent slipping and to make your walk through Hobbiton safer and more enjoyable.

New Zealand weather can change quickly, so it is always a good idea to be prepared with suitable clothing and sun protection. We were lucky to have a beautiful, bright day during our visit to Hobbiton, with no drizzle or rain and just the right amount of sunshine. Our second visit to New Zealand gave our family many wonderful memories. We explored new places, discovered beautiful landscapes and experienced parts of the North Island that were completely different from our previous South Island adventure. But Hobbiton remains one of the destinations that stands out most clearly in our memories.
From the excitement on the bus to our first glimpse of the village, from walking between the Hobbit holes to taking family photographs among the green hills, every part of the experience felt special. Most importantly, we experienced it together. My husband, our two children and I shared an unforgettable evening in a place that once existed only in movies and books. Years from now, we may forget some of the smaller details of our New Zealand trip.
But I don't think we will forget the moment our children screamed with excitement when Hobbiton first appeared before us. That moment captured the magic of the entire experience.
