My Husband planned a tour to New Zealand south island in April last year as a special gift for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was so excited because we had never gone there before. Had 3 hours fly to Christchurch from Sydney and a got a rental car for 5 days. First day,we drove from Christchurch to Queenstown and visited Tasman Glacier and many spectacular places in beautiful New Zealand. It was getting dark when we arrived in our Queenstown hotel.

Way to Milford Sound
The next morning, we set off on our remarkable 291km drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound, a journey that takes around four hours without long stops. Although the road can occasionally be closed because of rockfalls, heavy snow or severe weather, we were lucky to have the opportunity to travel along this spectacular route. The weather was slightly rainy, but the light rain only added to the magical atmosphere. As we drove deeper into Fiordland, the scenery became more dramatic, with towering mountains, lush green valleys, winding roads and mist-covered peaks surrounding us.The drive itself was an unforgettable experience and easily one of the most beautiful scenic journeys I have ever taken. Waterfalls seemed to appear around every bend, cascading down the steep mountain slopes after the rain, while crystal-clear streams and rivers flowed alongside the road. The landscape constantly changed, giving us countless opportunities to stop, take photographs and simply admire the incredible beauty of nature. Even the children were fascinated by the scenery and enjoyed watching the waterfalls, mountains and wildlife along the way. It's difficult to describe the beauty of this journey in words; you really have to experience the road to Milford Sound for yourself.

Homer Tunnel - A Remarkable Journey Through the Mountains
After enjoying the beautiful journey halfway, we stopped for a morning coffee break in Te Anau. Refreshed and ready to continue, we began the unforgettable drive towards Milford Sound. Before the Milford Road makes its dramatic descent through the stunning Cleddau Valley, it passes through the famous Homer Tunnel.Opened in 1954, the Homer Tunnel is an incredible engineering achievement. It stretches for 1,270m through a solid rocky mountain. The tunnel was carved through the rugged landscape of the Southern Alps, creating the only road access to Milford Sound. Construction began in 1935 and took many years due to the challenging mountain conditions. The tunnel was officially opened in 1954, connecting Te Anau and Queenstown with Milford Sound.
The Homer Tunnel is a one-way tunnel. Traffic is controlled by signals at both ends. Visitors can check the waiting time displayed on signs before entering. Driving through this dark mountain passage is a unique experience. As you emerge from the tunnel, the breathtaking views of the Cleddau Valley and the road towards Milford Sound create an unforgettable moment in one of the world’s most scenic journeys.
We were lucky and only had to wait about 5-6 minutes before entering the Homer Tunnel. The journey to Milford Sound was an unforgettable experience. Every moment was enjoyable, from the unique tunnel drive to the sharp mountain bends and the breathtaking scenery surrounding the road. Along the way, there are many well marked stopping points where travellers can safely pull over, admire the views and capture amazing photographs.
Driving yourself gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace. You can stop whenever you like, explore hidden viewpoints, and truly appreciate the beauty of this spectacular journey to Milford Sound.

UNESCO World Heritage Wonder
Located within Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of New Zealand’s South Island. The landscape is breathtaking. Lush green forests cover the mountains and the cool, wet climate creates a unique rainforest environment. Towering cliffs rise dramatically from the deep, dark waters of the fiord, creating a scene that feels almost unreal.After rainfall, powerful waterfalls cascade down the steep mountain faces. Whether explored by boat, kayak or scenic flight, it offers an unforgettable experience and reveals the untouched, wild beauty of New Zealand’s South Island. My husband booked Southern Discovery cruise tour with meal before start our journey and we reached there on time. A crew member explained about Milford Sound weather, environment, natural beauty and many more things clearly. Our curious son listened it carefully and asked more questions time to time until finish our 2 hour journey around the sound.
Milford Sound: Where Mountains, Waterfalls and Wildlife Meet
Milford sounds is a must see if you visit New Zealand. We took the cruise on a rainy day, which increased the number and volume of the waterfalls and creates a network of falls that are quite amazing to see. It is just so amazing to see all the waterfalls coming down the mountains.This is one of my favorite places I've ever been. The views are unbelievably spectacular with steep cliffs,lush green mountains with white snow on top and wildlife. There are so many marvelous waterfalls all over the place that will take your breath away surprising to see the fjord end up meeting the Tasman sea. We got up close to some of the larger ones.We saw dolphins and sea lions. It is often called one of the most beautiful places on Earth, it’s a sight that shouldn’t be missed. Milford Sound was carved out by an erosion of glaciers during the ice ages. |

No matter what the weather Milford sound is a joy to the senses, an amazing natural wonder. There is no road toll on the Milford Road, you can drive straight into the National Park at no charge. The Milford Road offers a spectacular journey into the heart of Fiordland National Park. This is a fabulous place to come and see true beauty of nature. A trip to Milford Sound is unforgettable experience which you won't want to miss. In my opinion, one comes to New Zealand to see the breathtaking scenery. A truly amazing experience with the most stunning picture perfect views. However, I'd like to return again on a sunny day.
Next Time Tips
After enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Milford Sound, we started our journey back to Queenstown. By the time we arrived at our hotel, it was already getting dark, cold and we were completely exhausted. Although travelling from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back in one day is possible, we found the experience quite rushed, especially because there is so much beautiful scenery to enjoy along Milford Road. If we visit again, I would prefer to stay overnight in Te Anau or Milford Sound and take an early morning cruise. This would allow us to enjoy the journey at a more relaxed pace and make the most of the spectacular surroundings.For travellers visiting Milford Sound, a cruise is one of the most popular and convenient ways to experience the fjord and there are options to suit different budgets. Staying overnight also gives you more time to explore the many scenic stops along Milford Road rather than simply driving through them. An early cruise can be particularly rewarding, as the morning light, misty mountains and waterfalls create an unforgettable atmosphere. If you are exploring New Zealand's South Island, consider allowing extra time for the journey and adding other incredible destinations, such as Tasman Glacier, to your itinerary. Most importantly, don't rush Milford Sound is a place best enjoyed slowly, with plenty of time to stop, explore and take in the scenery.
