My Journey Through the Land of Ravana, Sita and Hanuman
During my visits to Sri Lanka, I had the opportunity to explore some of the most fascinating places connected with the legendary stories of King Ravana, Princess Sita, Lord Rama and Hanuman. Each journey took me through breathtaking landscapes, from the mist covered mountains of the central highlands to the ancient temples and beautiful coastal regions of the island.
To explore the legendary Ramayana Trail, I travelled across several regions of Sri Lanka, including Ella, Nuwara Eliya, the North Western Province and the island's southern coast. Along the way, I visited many places deeply connected with the ancient epic, such as the majestic Ravana Falls, the peaceful Sita Amman Kovil, the breathtaking landscapes of Maha Eliya Thenna (Horton Plains), the iconic Rama Sethu (Adam's Bridge), the legendary Ashoka Vatika (Hakgala Botanical Garden), the scenic Dunhinda Falls and the ancient temples of Munneswaram Kovil and Koneswaram Kovil. Each destination offered its own unique blend of natural beauty, history and local tradition, making this journey far more than a sightseeing trip, it became an unforgettable experience through one of the world's greatest epics.

What fascinated me most was not only the connection these places have with ancient stories but also the incredible beauty surrounding them. The endless green mountains, cool mist flowing through the valleys, powerful waterfalls, golden beaches and centuries old temples created an atmosphere that was almost magical. Standing in these places, where nature and legend meet, was an unforgettable experience. Sometimes, there are simply no words to describe the beauty and emotions felt while travelling through such remarkable landscapes.

Although the Ramayana, one of the world's oldest and most celebrated epics, was written in ancient India by the sage Valmiki, many locations mentioned in the story are traditionally associated with places across Sri Lanka.
During my journey, I discovered that these locations are not just tourist attractions; they are places where ancient stories, local traditions and natural beauty come together. The Ramayana Trail continues to attract pilgrims, history enthusiasts and travellers from around the world. The Epic Story of Rama, Sita and Ravana
According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, lived in exile in the forest with his wife, Princess Sita and his devoted brother, Lakshmana. During their exile, they encountered Shurpanakha (also spelled Surpanakha), the sister of King Ravana and a princess of Lanka. According to the epic, after Shurpanakha tried to harm Sita, Lakshmana cut off her nose and ears as punishment.
Humiliated and seeking revenge, Shurpanakha went to her brother Ravana and described Sita's extraordinary beauty. Determined to avenge his sister and captivated by the description of Sita, Ravana devised a plan to abduct her. While Lord Rama and Lakshmana were away from their forest dwelling, Ravana, disguised as a wandering ascetic, kidnapped Princess Sita and carried her across the sea to his magnificent kingdom of Lanka. This dramatic event became the turning point of the Ramayana and ultimately led to the great battle between Lord Rama and King Ravana.
Determined to rescue Sita, Rama formed an alliance with Hanuman and the Vaanara (monkey) army. Hanuman travelled across the ocean to Lanka in search of Sita and discovered her in the beautiful Ashoka Vatika garden. After many dramatic events, Rama's army reached Lanka, leading to the legendary battle between Rama and Ravana, a story that has been celebrated for thousands of years through literature, art, dance and religious traditions throughout Asia.

📌 Walking Through the Legendary Ashoka Vatika
One of the highlights of my Ramayana Trail journey was visiting Hakgala Botanical Garden, which local tradition identifies as the ancient Ashoka Vatika (Ashoka Vana). Walking through its peaceful gardens, surrounded by misty mountains, vibrant flowers and towering trees, I found it easy to imagine why this beautiful place has been linked to one of the most emotional chapters of the Ramayana. According to the epic, this is where Princess Sita spent her time after being brought to Lanka by King Ravana and where Hanuman finally found her with Lord Rama's message of hope.

📌 My Experience at Maha Eliya Thenna (Horton Plains)
During my journey through Sri Lanka's Ramayana Trail, I also had the opportunity to visit Maha Eliya Thenna, today known as Horton Plains, one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the country's central highlands. Surrounded by mist covered grasslands, cloud forests, dramatic mountains and deep valleys, this place has a unique beauty that feels almost untouched by time.

Local traditions connect Maha Eliya Thenna with legends surrounding King Ravana, suggesting that this mysterious land may have been part of his ancient kingdom. Although these stories remain part of Sri Lanka's rich folklore rather than proven history, the atmosphere of Horton Plains makes it easy to understand why so many legends have been created around this magical landscape.
During my visit, I explored the famous World's End viewpoint and the beautiful waterfalls hidden among the mountains. The breathtaking views from the edge of the cliffs, the cool mountain air, and the peaceful surroundings created an unforgettable experience. What amazed me most was the incredible variety of native plants, colorful flowers and unique vegetation found throughout the area. Walking through the plains felt like entering a natural garden carefully designed by nature itself.

📌 Where Legend Meets the Ocean: My Rama Sethu Bridge
During my journey to Mannar, Sri Lanka, I had the opportunity to visit the area connected with the legendary Rama Sethu (Adam's Bridge). Today, the chain of limestone shoals stretching between Rameswaram in India and Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. Standing near this historic and mysterious stretch of sea was a truly unforgettable experience. Although we were unable to enter the bridge area itself due to access restrictions and permission requirements, we could still admire the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding ocean.
The sea was incredibly calm and clear, with shallow waters extending towards the horizon. From the shore, we could clearly see several small islands and sandbanks appearing across the sea. Some of them looked as if they were gently floating on the water, creating a scene that immediately reminded me of the ancient stories of the Ramayana, where Hanuman and the Vaanara army were believed to have built a bridge across the ocean to reach Lanka.
Standing there, looking across the endless blue waters, I could understand why this place has inspired countless stories and beliefs for thousands of years. Whether viewed through the lens of mythology, nature, or history, the beauty and mystery of Rama Sethu create a special feeling that is difficult to describe. The peaceful ocean, the distant islands, and the connection to one of the world's greatest epics made this visit a memorable part of my Ramayana Trail journey through Sri Lanka.
📌 Ussangoda National Park: The Mysterious Red Earth Landscape
During my journey along the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka, I also visited Ussangoda National Park, a place unlike anywhere else on the island. The moment I stepped onto this unique landscape, I was amazed by its unusual appearance. The ground was covered with striking reddish soil that looked almost like burnt earth or red bricks, creating a dramatic contrast against the surrounding greenery and the deep blue ocean.
According to local folklore, Ussangoda is connected with Hanuman's legendary journey during the Ramayana. Some traditions believe that the unusual red coloured land was created when Hanuman's burning tail touched the earth after his visit to Lanka. Although this story remains part of cultural belief rather than proven history, the mysterious appearance of Ussangoda makes it easy to understand why such legends have surrounded this place for generations.
What fascinated me most was the rare landscape of this coastal area. Unlike typical forests or grasslands, Ussangoda has patches of open red soil scattered among areas covered with short grass. Local stories say that many trees do not grow naturally on this land, leaving parts of the area almost bare and giving it a unique, otherworldly appearance. The combination of red earth, wild grass, ocean breeze and untouched surroundings creates a feeling of walking through a landscape from another world.

📌 Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave: The Hidden Legends of Ella
Surrounded by the misty mountains and lush greenery of Sri Lanka's hill country, Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave in Ella are among the most fascinating places connected with the legends of King Ravana. The magnificent waterfall, flowing down a rocky cliff surrounded by tropical forests, is one of the most beautiful and famous natural attractions in Sri Lanka. Its powerful streams, refreshing mist and dramatic mountain setting create a breathtaking view that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
I have visited Ravana Falls many times, and every visit has given me a different experience. Sometimes the waterfall appears powerful and energetic after heavy rainfall, while during calmer periods it creates a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by the sounds of flowing water and nature. Standing in front of this beautiful waterfall, with the green mountains rising around it, is an unforgettable experience. The combination of natural beauty and the ancient legends connected with this place makes it truly special.
According to local traditions, this area was once part of King Ravana's ancient kingdom and is believed to have been connected with his hidden caves and secret pathways. The nearby Ravana Cave holds a special place in Sri Lankan folklore, with legends suggesting that it was one of Ravana's secret shelters and part of an underground tunnel system that connected different areas of his kingdom. Some stories also associate these caves with the events surrounding Princess Sita's captivity, although these accounts remain part of mythology and local traditions rather than proven historical facts.
The mysterious atmosphere of Ravana Cave and the breathtaking beauty of Ravana Falls make it easy to understand why generations of people have connected this landscape with ancient legends. The sound of the waterfall, the ancient rocks, the thick forests and the cool mountain air create a feeling of stepping into a world where nature and storytelling come together.

📌 Visiting Munneswaram Temple: A Sacred Stop Along the Ramayana Trail
During my journey through Sri Lanka's Ramayana Trail, I had the opportunity to visit the ancient Munneswaram Temple in Chilaw, one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. Visiting this sacred place was a memorable experience, as it is surrounded by centuries of devotion, history and fascinating legends connected with the story of Lord Rama and King Ravana.
According to local traditions, after defeating King Ravana and rescuing Princess Sita, Lord Rama travelled through this region. It is believed that Rama felt the burden of the battle and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for peace and forgiveness. The legend says that Lord Shiva advised Rama to worship a Shiva Lingam at this place, and this sacred connection is believed to have led to the establishment of Munneswaram Temple.

As I continued exploring the legendary places connected with Sri Lanka's Ramayana Trail, my journey brought me to the breathtaking Koneswaram Temple in Trincomalee. Perched majestically on Swami Rock, a dramatic cliff overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean, this ancient Hindu temple is one of Sri Lanka's most revered spiritual landmarks. The location itself is extraordinary, where the sound of ocean waves, the fresh sea breeze, and the sacred atmosphere create a perfect harmony of nature, history and devotion.
According to Sri Lankan traditions connected with the Ramayana, Koneswaram Temple is believed to have a connection with Lord Rama and King Ravana. Some legends say that Ravana, who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, worshipped at this sacred site. It is also believed that after the battle with Ravana, Lord Rama visited places associated with Lord Shiva, continuing the spiritual journey that followed the great war.
When I arrived at Koneswaram Temple, the first thing that amazed me was its incredible location. Standing high above the ocean, with waves crashing against the rocks below and endless views stretching across the sea, the temple felt like a place where nature and spirituality come together. The colorful gopuram (tower), traditional architecture, peaceful surroundings and the devotion of visitors created a truly unforgettable atmosphere.
Walking around the temple area, I could feel the deep connection between Sri Lanka's ancient heritage and the legends that have been passed down through generations. The view from Swami Rock was especially memorable; the vast ocean, the sea breeze, and the sacred surroundings created a feeling of peace and wonder.
Koneswaram Temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Sri Lanka's rich cultural history. Although its connection with the Ramayana belongs to religious tradition and folklore rather than proven historical evidence, the temple continues to attract thousands of pilgrims and travellers who come to experience its spiritual importance, ancient stories and breathtaking beauty. For me, visiting Koneswaram Temple was more than a sightseeing experience. It was a journey into Sri Lanka's ancient traditions, where legends, faith, history and the beauty of nature come together above the endless Indian Ocean.

Nestled among the cool mountains, lush tea plantations and peaceful forests of the central highlands, this beautiful Hindu temple is one of the most important sites associated with the Ramayana. The tranquil surroundings and fresh mountain air make it easy to understand why this place has been cherished for generations.According to the Ramayana and local tradition, the temple stands near the legendary Ashoka Vatika, the garden where Princess Sita was believed to have been kept after being brought to Lanka by King Ravana. It is here that Hanuman is said to have found Sita and delivered Lord Rama's message, giving her hope that she would soon be rescued. Hidden among the green hills near Badulla, Dunhinda Falls is one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful waterfalls and a place surrounded by fascinating stories. As I stood in front of the powerful cascade, surrounded by the sound of rushing water and the peaceful beauty of the forest, I felt the special atmosphere that makes this place unforgettable. Although I was fortunate to visit many of the most well known sites along Sri Lanka's Ramayana Trail, there are still several fascinating places that I hope to explore in the future. Destinations such as Divurumpola Temple, Nilawari, Manavari Temple and Dunuwila are also traditionally associated with events from the Ramayana and continue to attract pilgrims and travellers from around the world.
